A Primary Election is the process political parties use to choose which candidates will represent them in the general election. Primaries happen for races at every level: local, state, and federal. In Texas, anyone can vote in either the Democratic or the Republican Primary. However, if you typically support Democratic candidates in a General Election, you are encouraged to vote in the Democratic Primary. In Texas, casting your vote in the Republican Primary as a Democrat does not move the needle. But it does make Democratic candidates’ job more difficult to find their voters and prepare for victory in November.
